Yahoo! brand world (Brand Universes) is the strategy a good idea?

Filed under: Google Blogoscoped — Wrote by Lees on Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 @ 9:23 am

By Christoph H? Rl

Last year October checks brand world after this concept, yahoo! Announced them recently will republication 6 similar sites. Before the end of the year, amount should can achieve about the same 100.

This brand world idea is quite simple, yahoo! Provide a lot of different services, the person that use can release content over. One the famousest is Flickr, depositing 10 thousand pieces of about a hundred pictures. Now Yahoo! Buy the access of next brand, for instance ” Ha Libo is special ” or ” Wii ” , release a new website that contains the special content related to the theme next. The content that these over issuance comes from Yahoo! Each provides service.

“You cannot enter our list through spending money quite, we are doing significant to the user thing. ” Yahoo! Vince Broady says.

When I hear of this project, I am becoming aware it will be very marvellous, but also have a few inactive sides. The first, yahoo! Released the content that produces by the user afresh. Yahoo! The picture that the user place of each service produces, character and other thing, by Yahoo! Put below a specific topic, I do not like this idea. Of course, yahoo! The gain in the meeting advertisement service from these brand world websites is very much money, but be in after uploading the photograph to Flickr, do you want to see it appears on another website?

The choice that 2 o’clock is content source. Yahoo! Won’t choose content objectively with search algorithm, have an editor group however. I think to make computer will be searched automatically and choose to compare subjective choice better, faster even.

Another respect is they do not use the most important kind that makes content by the user — rich guest.

How do you see this problem?

World’s Largest Portrait

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 @ 11:59 pm

Continuing the never-ending stream of “World’s largest…” we
present The World’s Largest Portrait, which adorns
the hills of
Erzincan in Turkey.

The massive http://www.google.com/search?q=7.5 square km in square miles
7.5 square km painting is of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustafa_Kemal_Atatürk Mustafa
Kemal Atatürk, the first president of Turkey until his death in
1938. Despite his passing some time ago, Atatürk’s face is still a
very popular image and is featured on banknotes, public buildings,
schools, and (in this case) mountains.

alt="">

The image was painted in 1982 by the order of the then-ruling
military junta and it took 3000 soldiers just under a month to
finish their handiwork.

Over the years the Turkish army have continued to write on the
country’s hills, more recently writing one of Ataturk’s favourite
sayings: “
Ne Mutlu Türküm Diyene!“.

With the second largest standing armed force in NATO (after the
much larger USA), perhaps the soldiers have spare time on their
hands?

The World’s Largest Swimming Pool

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 @ 10:55 am

Apparently officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World
Records, here in San Alfonso del Mar in Chile you can hardly
miss
the world’s largest swimming pool!

alt="">
alt="">

This absolutely immense pool is 1
kilometre long
and covers eight hectares - that’s
80,000 square metres! Furthermore, it contains an
incredible 250,000 cubic metres of water.

And yes, it’s right beside the beach, and no more than a stone’s
throw… from the sea.

World’s Largest Marriage Proposal

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Tuesday, December 25th, 2007 @ 6:26 am

Here at GGSS we’ve previously

featured rooftop and field-based marriage proposals which, for
some unknown reason, are highly likely to feature misspellings or
bad grammar.

So we’re very pleased to see that the latest finding, the words

Marry Me Tammy” written in a field, do pass our strict
criteria for aerial-based marriage proposals. Congratulations!

However, some may call the suitor (a man named Brian) a cheater:
he enlisted outside help to create his proposal!
The giant writing was actually written by mapping specialists http://www.gismatters.com/products.html GISmatters for
the reality television program ‘Perfect Proposal’.

The 100-foot high letters, claimed to be the World’s Largest
Marriage Proposal, were revealed to Tammy from the window of an
aeroplane back in 2004.

World’s Largest… Erection.

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 @ 8:17 pm

I’m sorry to report that I don’t mean any old structure either…
nope, this is honestly claimed by the Chinese to be
The World’s Largest Phallus. At least I think this is
it - as you can see the satellite shot isn’t vey clear. To make up
however, here’s a http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_2362087.html gratuitous
ground-level photo!

alt="">

The 9 metre erection (30 feet), is named
Sky Pillar, and has been built at the Longwan Shaman
Amusement Park in Changchun city, and apparently symbolizes the
“pursuit of happiness and prosperity”.

Which is pretty fitting really huh?

World’s most leaning towers

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 @ 8:17 pm

A small German church has laid a bold claim to the title of
World’s most squinty building“.

Located in the town of
Bad Frankenhausen, the bell tower of a 14th century church has
been measured at an angle of 4.5 degrees to the
vertical. With the backing of the Guinness Book of World Records,
the town hopes to steal the limelight from the well know Leaning
tower of Pisa and its puny 3.97 degree
angle.

alt="">

The folks in Italy responded to the announcement with barely
more than a “meh”, but the nearby town of
Suurhusen kicked up fuss with their leaning church tower of
5.07 degrees, claiming this to be the true title
holder#fn:1″ rel=”footnote 1
(sadly it’s in a low res area).

Google Earth users might ask what all the fuss is about as, from
appearances, the cities of New York and Dallas must hold the title
with thier precarious leaning skyscrapers.

alt="">
alt="">

These towers are, of course, not leaning at all. They are at the
points where two differently angled aerial photographs have been
stitched together.

Previously on Google Sightseeing we’ve seen The
Leaning Tower of Pisa,
Leaning Tower of Niles and the intentionally leaning Kio
Towers which, at 15 degrees to the vertical, must surely be a
world record contender?

World Largest Cow

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 @ 8:17 pm

It would seem that we have finally reached the absolute
pinnacle of our continuing quest to discover the latest
and greatest “World’s blankest blank“, as seen by
satellite!

Yes you lucky people, prepare yourselves for…
The World’s Largest Cow
!

This is actually Salem Sue of New Salem, North Dakota,
who is http://www.google.com/search?btnG=Google Search&q=38 feet in metres
38 feet high, http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=50 feet in metres&btnG=Search
50 feet long, and was constructed from http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=six tons in kilos&btnG=Search
six tons of reinforced fiberglass back in ‘74 for the primary
purpose of, um, bigging up the local dairy farmers I guess.

Over in the UK we have our own famous
Concrete Cows sculpture, which were created four years after
Salem Sue by Canadian-born artist Liz Leyh, but are only about half
life size.
