Encouraging people to contribute knowledge

Filed under: Official Google Blog — Wrote by Lees on Sunday, May 4th, 2008 @ 2:23 am

The web contains an enormous amount of information, and Google has
helped to make that information more easily accessible by providing
pretty good search facilities. But not everything is written nor is
everything well organized to make it easily discoverable. There are
millions of people who possess useful knowledge that they would
love to share, and there are billions of people who can benefit
from it. We believe that many do not share that knowledge today
simply because it is not easy enough to do that. The challenge
posed to us by Larry, Sergey and Eric was to find a way to help
people share their knowledge. This is our main goal.

Earlier this week, we started inviting a selected group of people
to try a new, free tool that we are calling "knol", which
stands for a unit of knowledge. Our goal is to encourage people who
know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about
it. The tool is still in development and this is just the first
phase of testing. For now, using it is by invitation only. But we
wanted to share with everyone the basic premises and goals behind
this project.

The key idea behind the knol project is to highlight authors. Books
have authors' names right on the cover, news articles have
bylines, scientific articles always have authors — but somehow the
web evolved without a strong standard to keep authors names
highlighted. We believe that knowing who wrote what will
significantly help users make better use of web content. At the
heart, a knol is just a web page; we use the word "knol"
as the name of the project and as an instance of an article
interchangeably. It is well-organized, nicely presented, and has a
distinct look and feel, but it is still just a web page. Google
will provide easy-to-use tools for writing, editing, and so on, and
it will provide free hosting of the content. Writers only need to
write; we'll do the rest.

A knol on a particular topic is meant to be the first thing someone
who searches for this topic for the first time will want to read.
The goal is for knols to cover all topics, from scientific
concepts, to medical information, from geographical and historical,
to entertainment, from product information, to how-to-fix-it
instructions. Google will not serve as an editor in any way,
and will not bless any content. All editorial responsibilities and
control will rest with the authors. We hope that knols will include
the opinions and points of view of the authors who will put their
reputation on the line. Anyone will be free to write. For many
topics, there will likely be competing knols on the same subject.
Competition of ideas is a good thing.

Knols will include strong community tools. People will be able to
submit comments, questions, edits, additional content, and so on.
Anyone will be able to rate a knol or write a review of it. Knols
will also include references and links to additional information.
At the discretion of the author, a knol may include ads. If an
author chooses to include ads, Google will provide the author with
substantial revenue share from the proceeds of those ads.

Once testing is completed, participation in knols will be
completely open, and we cannot expect that all of them will be of
high quality. Our job in Search Quality will be to rank the knols
appropriately when they appear in Google search results. We are
quite experienced with ranking web pages, and we feel confident
that we will be up to the challenge. We are very excited by the
potential to substantially increase the dissemination of
knowledge.

We do not want to build a walled garden of content; we want to
disseminate it as widely as possible. Google will not ask for any
exclusivity on any of this content and will make that content
available to any other search engine.

As always, a picture is worth a thousands words, so an example of a
knol is below (click on the image twice to see the page in full).
The main content is real, and we encourage you to read it (you may
sleep better afterwards!), but most of the meta-data — like
reviews, ratings, and comments — are not real, because, of course,
this has not been in the public eye as yet. Again, this is a
preliminary version.

OpenSocial makes the web better

Filed under: Official Google Blog — Wrote by Lees on Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 @ 9:58 pm

Posted by Joe Kraus, Director of
Product Management

As the web goes, so goes Google, and that's why we care about
making the web better. Five months ago, href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/gears_20070530.html"
id="d4zo" >we launched Google
Gears to make the web better by making it work offline. Now, we
want to make the web better by making it more social.

A tremendous amount of activity is occurring on social networks
these days. Hundreds of millions of people share photos, rate
movies, and throw virtual sheep at one another. All these social
networks are looking to give their communities more and more things
to do — and they realize they can't do it on their own. They
need to open up and become platforms for developers to extend. So,
many social networks have looked at, or launched, their own APIs
that typically do the same kinds of things: give access to user
profiles and friend networks, and allow an application to post
activities so that everyone's circle of friends knows what the
others are doing. All of this has been good news, because
developers could get their applications onto a social
network.

But there's a problem: it wasn't one or two social networks
doing this, but ten or fifteen. Now, to get on all the social
networks a developer has had to customize their application for
each one. When your "development team" is just one or two
people, the proliferation of APIs forces you to make tough choices,
because you can't do that much one-off work. Not only is this
situation bad for developers, it's bad for consumers too: When
developers can't afford to do the work to make their
applications work on a certain social network, the people using
those networks lose out.

That's why today we're excited to introduce href="http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial" >OpenSocial, a set
of common APIs that make it easy to create and host social
applications on the web. OpenSocial allows developers to write an
application once that will run anywhere that supports the
OpenSocial APIs.

It's good for developers because it makes it easier for them to
focus on making their web apps better; they get lots of
distribution with a lot less work. It's good for websites,
because they can tap into the creativity of the largest possible
developer community (and no longer have to compete with one another
for developer attention). And finally, it's good for users,
because they get more applications in more places. Global members
of the OpenSocial community include href="http://www.myspace.com/" id="cgm8"
>MySpace, href="http://www.engage.com/e/home.htm" id="gw3_"
>Engage.com, href="http://www.friendster.com/" id="h4nm"

We were thrilled to see href="http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/partners.html" >so many
partners turn out for our very first CampFire One event, a
small gathering of developers at the Googleplex. They do the best
job of explaining why they support this vision of an open,
programmable web. And so in the spirit of being social, we want to
share the video from tonight's event.

Google Web Toolkit: Towards a better web

Filed under: Official Google Blog — Wrote by Lees on Friday, December 7th, 2007 @ 10:36 pm

Posted by Bruce Johnson and Dan
Peterson, Google Web Toolkit team

We're very pleased to tell you that the href="http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/" >Google Web Toolkit
(GWT) is no longer in beta as of href="http://googlewebtoolkit.blogspot.com/2007/08/gwt-14-release-and-out-of-beta.html" >
today's release of GWT 1.4. For Java developers who have
used GWT to create high-end web applications over the last year,
this may not seem all that surprising. But if you haven't yet
heard the story behind GWT, this seems like the perfect
time…

If you've been in the technology industry for a while, you
probably remember when enterprises and software vendors had to
think pretty hard about whether to develop locally-installed
desktop applications or web-based browser applications. These days,
whether you're building href="http://code.google.com/gme/" >mashups, href="http://code.google.com/apis/gadgets/" >gadgets, or
full-blown applications, it's a no-brainer: the browser is the
delivery platform of choice. However, users expect more from the
up-and-coming generation of web applications than the simple
click-and-wait of yesterweb. And if you're a web developer, you
know that this requires href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajax_(programming)" >AJAX,
the cluster of technologies including JavaScript and dynamic HTML
that can make browsers do backflips.

But the stark reality of AJAX applications is that, although they
can deliver sexy features and great usability, they are unusually
hard to engineer. Browser quirks and the anything-goes nature of
JavaScript will inevitably frustrate even the most dedicated
developers and add risk to your schedule with every line of code
written. If you do eventually manage to construct a complex AJAX
application that works, you're likely to find that maintaining
it over time can be a major challenge. And all that doesn't
even scratch the surface of testing, optimizing, securing and
internationalizing your application. (If you are currently working
on an ambitious AJAX project and haven't yet come to this
conclusion, please re-read this post in six months when you're
further along!)

We've learned a lot from our experiences building web
applications, and we're happy to share the tools we've
created. Google Web Toolkit is an open source project that helps
Java developers harness the richness of AJAX in a cross-platform,
web-friendly environment. The magic trick is that GWT
cross-compiles Java source code into standalone JavaScript that you
can include in any web page. Instead of spending time becoming
JavaScript gurus and fighting browser quirks, developers using GWT
spend time productively coding and debugging in the robust Java
programming language, using their existing Java tools and
expertise. Naturally, GWT is also a great way to easily take
advantage of the latest-and-greatest Google APIs and browser
enhancements, such as href="http://code.google.com/apis/gears/" >Google Gears.

In addition to making debugging far easier, GWT's unique
compilation-based approach to AJAX has the nice property that it
rewards developers for good software engineering practices. Java
source code that is clear and organized can be easily optimized by
the GWT compiler, which is a nice antidote to the frequent
hack-and-slash approach that's all too common in JavaScript
development. As your application grows, the GWT compiler begins to
pay off in even bigger ways. Unused code is automatically removed
so that scripts are smaller and pages load faster. Complex code can
be automatically coalesced and simplified. Most importantly,
because the Java language is statically typed, many common errors
can be caught during development rather than production. You can
observe the high-performance results yourself in GWT's href="http://gwt.google.com/samples/Mail/Mail.html" >sample Mail
application.

Technical details aside, GWT makes it easy to develop fast,
friendly web apps that users love — which is, after all, the
point.

Googlebombing ‘failure’

Filed under: Official Google Blog — Wrote by Lees on Monday, December 3rd, 2007 @ 10:12 pm

Posted by Marissa Mayer, Director of
Consumer Web Products

If you do a Google search on the word [ href="http://www.google.com/search?q=failure" >failure] or the
phrase [ href="http://www.google.com/search?q=miserable failure" >miserable
failure], the top result is currently the White House’s
official biographical page for President Bush. We've received
some complaints recently from users who assume that this reflects a
political bias on our part. I'd like to explain how these
results come up in order to allay these concerns.

Google's search results are generated by computer programs that
rank web pages in large part by examining the number and relative
popularity of the sites that link to them. By using a practice
called href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&c2coff=1&q=googlebombing&btnG=Search" >
googlebombing, however, determined pranksters can occasionally
produce odd results. In this case, a number of webmasters use the
phrases [failure] and [miserable failure] to describe and link to
President Bush's website, thus pushing it to the top of
searches for those phrases. We don't condone the practice of
googlebombing, or any other action that seeks to affect the
integrity of our search results, but we're also reluctant to
alter our results by hand in order to prevent such items from
showing up. Pranks like this may be distracting to some, but they
don't affect the overall quality of our search service, whose
objectivity, as always, remains the core of our mission.
