Here at the King Khaled Airport in Saudi Arabia, a little way
away from the main terminal, there’s a mysterious and unexplained
outline of a plane marked out on the desert sand.

alt="">
The shape is similar in size and dimensions to the four-engine
Boeing 747; perhaps one was used as a fire
training aircraft and since removed? If so, then where did it
go, and how did they remove it without disturbing the outline?
Looking closer, is it possible that the plane shape is actually
marked by some sort of plant life? Perhaps the brown dots that
litter the landscape are shrubs and for some reason they have
sprouted up where a plane used to stand.

discussion and an actual email to King Khaled Airport - they’re
still no closer to proving what this really is!
Anybody got any other suggestions?

Check out this brilliant shot of a plane in flight,
aerotowing a glider into the sky!

These guys clearly took off from the nearby Devon & Somerset
Gliding Club, where we can see
several other gliders, presumably waiting for their own time in
the sky.

You can see all sort of pictures of gliders at the http://www.dsgc.co.uk/ DSGC’s homepage, and read more
about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliding Gliding at
Wikipedia.

Deep in the Mojave desert, there’s
some sort of aircraft which looks as if it crashed and was left
to rot. So how did it come to be here?

There’s a military airfield to the east,
Camp Wilson, so it’s possible the aircraft came from there -
but why would they just leave it in the middle of the desert?
Of interest is that this location is very close to (that famed
magnet of extra-terrestrial activity) Giant
Rock. There’s even more airstrips just south east of the crash
site at
Outlying Field Seagle, where two of the strips are abandoned
but http://www.airfields-freeman.com/CA/Airfields_CA_SanBernardino_SE.htm#seagle
apparently the third is still in operation. Most interestingly,
the Xs at each end of the runway indicates that no-one should try
to land here, as it’s used exclusively by unmanned
aircraft…
