Island and Lake Recursion (Island Week 2)

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Sunday, January 27th, 2008 @ 12:00 am

(It’s the last day of
Island Week 2 here at GSS, which means we’re almost done with
posting about islands. And it’s lasted about a week.)

Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada is
officially the world’s largest island that
is located within a lake
.

alt="">

That’s pretty simple, but within the island there are an
additional 180 lakes…

Within one of those lakes,
Mindemoya Lake (to be precise), is the largest island
,in a lake, on an island, in a lake
(in the world). Still
with me?

src="http://googlesightseeing.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/mindemoya.jpg"
alt="">

But we’ve missed out a step! On the island of Sumatra in
Indonesia we find Lake Toba, and its principal island of
Samosir - which at http://www.google.com/search?q=630 square km in square miles
630 square km is easily the largest island, in a lake,
on a island
.

src="http://googlesightseeing.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/samosir.jpg"
alt="">

After Samosir, the second largest island within a lake is
Glover Island, which is in the Grand Lake on the island of
Newfoundland.

src="http://googlesightseeing.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/glover2.jpg"
alt="">

However, Glover Island’s largest lake also has many islands, of
which the largest is about http://www.google.com/search?q=2 acres in square miles 2
acres. This
tiny, unnamed island is therefore the largest island,
in a lake, on an island, in a lake, on an island
!

src="http://googlesightseeing.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/glover.jpg"
alt="">

Unfortunately, it has no lakes in which we might find further
islands. src='http://googlesightseeing.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif'
>

Seeing as it’s island week, we’ve left out many additional facts
about the largest lakes found on islands (some of
which are larger that the lakes containing islands we’ve mentioned
here) but I think this post has been confusing enough!

Sunset Lake Floating Bridge

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 @ 10:55 am

The
Sunset Lake Floating Bridge in Brookfield, Vermont is actually
a GSS first, as we’ve never
featured a floating bridge before.

src="http://googlesightseeing.com/wp-content/sunset-lake-floatinge-bridge.jpg"
alt="">

Built on floating logs all the way back in 1820, upgraded to
tarred barrels in 1884, and plastic barrels in 1978, this is
actually the seventh version of the bridge, which despite long
periods of closure during its lifetime is today open for you to
drive your car over if you’re in the area.

Bear in mind that you’re more than likely to get a little wet
though, as the bridge was actually designed to be http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f2/Brookfield_VT_bridge.jpg
permanently semi-submerged…

You can read more about the bridge at http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tips/getAttraction.php?tip_AttractionNo==1375

Giant Man-Shaped Lake

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Monday, December 24th, 2007 @ 11:07 pm

It would seem that someone has spent a lot of time and money to
create this lake, in the shape of
an extremely happy looking man! I’m not sure what he’s got to
be so happy about though. I mean, this guy’s manhood isn’t a patch
on the

Anyway, I haven’t got the slightest clue why somebody went to
all this effort. Has anyone got any ideas?

these guys got this location from in the first place (they seem
to have a bad habit of neglecting to include any attribution you
see).

The Lake House

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 @ 8:18 pm

Has anyone ever seen the Sandra Bullock / Keanu Reeves
chick-flick http://imdb.com/title/tt0410297/ The Lake
House?

I’ve not, but I watched http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thelakehouse/ the
trailer, and the movie seems to be based around a lake house
where both characters live, years apart, yet can communicate via a
mailbox http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tardis TARDIS.

The house was actually a temporary structure built purely for
filming. But in the Google Earth aerial photo it can still be seen
on the banks of
Maple Lake. Look closely and you’ll also see a camera boom,
trailers, a blue pick-up truck (driven by Reeves’ character), and
fake snow around the building.

Soon after filming was completed the lake house was
destroyed.
