Australia's federal election is on 24 November 2007, and the
campaign is well and truly in its final stages. Prime Minister
Howard and Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd are adding

href="http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=&ie=UTF-8&q=howard rudd campaign&btnG=Search" >
final details to their policies
and making their

href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND4bjDqE45k&feature=related" >
final appeal for votes
.

You may recall that we

href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/09/australia-readies-itself-for-google.html" >
launched an election site
in September to help Australians stay
informed. We've now updated the "Australian 2007
Election"

href="http://maps.google.com.au/maps/mm?ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=-25.335448,135.745076&spn=33.002964,59.765625&z=4&om=1" >
feature in Google Maps
so that, for all 150 House of
Representatives seats, you can click on any candidate's name to
see all their Google search results, or their YouTube channel. And
with one click, you can now find an incredible array of information
from across the Internet — news stories, videos, personal
websites, party websites, blogs, and all the rest — about all
1,054 candidates for all 150 seats.

We've also added in all polling booth locations based on
information from the href="http://www.aec.gov.au/" >Australian Electoral Commission,
so voters can easily find their nearest polling booth on the map,
together with opening hours and wheelchair accessibility. Voting in
Australia is compulsory, so there's now no excuse not to turn
up and have your say next Saturday.

Australia readies itself for a Google election

Looking from down under, the long U.S. election cycle ensures that
there is no shortage of political headlines generated more than a
year out from the actual Presidential election. Many of you may not
realise that Australia is also readying itself to enter campaign
mode. A federal election is anticipated to be held before the end
of the year. You can be sure as the Australian parties get out on
the hustings, babies will be kissed, doors knocked and hands
vigorously shook — but this election campaign is already a lot
different to others, with digital media playing a new and important
role.

Today, in Sydney, we announced the launch of a href="http://www.google.com.au/election2007" >Google Australia
election website, so that Australian voters can have an
intimate look at the parties, candidates and election issues, all
in one Google location. These services, spanning Search, Maps,
News, video, Earth, Trends, and iGoogle, enable voters to organise,
find and share Australian election information more easily than
ever.

We created a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/auelection" >Picasa Web Album
to showcase all the elements, and we're pleased to offer these
world-first tools that were developed in our Australian office.
Here's hoping Australians will find them useful and even fun.
It's our view that democracy on the web works — and the web
can work for democracy.

On the map Down Under

Google Australia has officially come out of beta–we've
recently launched our new Australian operation. While Google has
had a presence Down Under since late 2002, we have only recently
moved into our new digs, which have water views that are the envy
of Googlers worldwide.

This new Googleplex in Sydney gives us the opportunity to scale our
operation to support a growing band of users, advertisers, and
partners. We have also invested heavily in local engineering talent
to conduct original R&D work, underscoring Google's
commitment to Australia and willingness to set up shop wherever
there's talent.

To coincide with the grand opening of the office, the team recently
released street maps for href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=australia&ll=-25.641526,134.033203&spn=25.50741,46.845703" >
Australia and href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=new zealand&ll=-40.900557,174.885971&spn=20.06978,52.294922" >
New Zealand so web developers can get a jump start on href="http://www.google.com/apis/maps" >integrating Down Under maps
into their sites.

If you're interested in becoming an Aussie Googler, take a look

Who wouldn't want to join this team?
