Keeping Up With The Joneses Part 3 and a Half

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 @ 8:49 pm

Astute readers will point out that we’ve already had
part four of the http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=447298&in_page_id=1770
famous series “Keeping up
with the Joneses“, but I’m going back to trampolines for the
missing part - get ready for the stupidly titled Keeping Up
With The Joneses Part 3 and a half!

First, some history: set in the massive 45 km² private gardens,

Eaton Hall has been home to the Grosvenor family since the 15th
century and in this time has served as a War hospital twice and had
its fair share of being demolished and then re-built.

alt="">

In 1874 Queen Victoria created the title “The Duke of
Westminster” for Eaton Halls owner, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Lupus_Grosvenor,_1st_Duke_of_Westminster
Hugh Grosvenor who, thanks to inherited property in central
London, was the richest man in Britain.

These days the Duke title is held by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Grosvenor,_6th_Duke_of_Westminster
Gerald Grosvenor, who also previously held the “Richest” title
but in recent years has http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6571269.stm slipped to
No. 5. However, the Duke has managed to cling onto the title of
Richest Man in Britain (who was born in Britain).

Of course, even billionaires have to keep up with the Joneses,
and the Duke of Westminster is no exception; outside the back of
the stately home there is a large blue trampoline, just like those
found
throughout the rest of the UK!

alt="">

Don’t forget that he’s rich though, the Duke has
2 trampolines!

The full http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday_Times_Rich_List_2007 2007
rich list will be published this Sunday.

Tracking Santa, then and now

Filed under: Official Google Blog — Wrote by Lees on Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 @ 2:06 am

Posted by Carrie Farrell, Veteran Santa
Tracker

It was more than half a century ago, on Christmas Eve in 1955, that
a Sears Roebuck & Co. store in Colorado Springs advertised a
special hotline number for kids to call Santa. What the company
didn't know at the time was that they had inadvertently
misprinted the telephone number. Instead of Santa's workshop,
the phone number put kids through to the

href="http://www.norad.mil/" >North American Aerospace Defense
Command
(NORAD), the bi-national U.S.-Canadian military
organization responsible for the aerospace defense of the U. S. and
Canada. Worse, it wasn't just any number at NORAD: it was the
commander-in-chief's operations hotline. In the spirit of the
season, Colonel Harry Shoup, the director of operations at the
time, had his staff check radar data for any indication of a sleigh
making its way south from the North Pole. They found that indeed
there were signs of Santa, and merrily gave the children who
called an update on his location. Thus, a tradition was born, and
NORAD has continued to help children track Santa on Christmas Eve
ever since.

It just so happens that Colonel Shoup is my grandfather, which is
why I'm so excited that, 52 years later, Google is joining the
effort. This holiday season, NORAD has partnered with Google to use
technology including Google Maps, Google Earth, iGoogle and YouTube
to track Santa. I can remember tracking Santa with my grandfather
as a child, and I'm so proud to see my company carry on his
vision of doing something this special for kids around the
world.

The countdown begins December 1st on NORAD's href="http://www.noradsanta.org/" >website,
where families can find a new kid-friendly game or activity every
day until December 24th. And starting at 1:00 am PST on December
24th, you'll be able to track Santa's trip in real time.
You can download href="http://earth.google.com/" id="tv1z" >Google Earth and add
the href="http://www.google.com/ig/adde?moduleurl=http://www.labpixies.com/gadgads/norad/norad_new.xml&source=snta"

page anytime, but make sure to come back to href="http://www.noradsanta.org/" id="i5xa" >noradsanta.org on
December 24th to download the special Santa Tracking file for an
enhanced 3D Santa-tracking experience.
