work to make our business more environmentally sustainable
throughout the year, but this month, we want to support the hard
work you're doing to fight climate change. Last week we href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/04/we-cant-wait-for-earth-day.html"

        Finally, I'll leave you with some photos of our team's trip
        to Washington, D.C. for this past Sunday’s Earth Day concert on the
        National Mall. It got a bit soggy, but we had a blast showing
        attendees how the Google Checkout donation campaign works.
        We're especially proud of our booth, which was made of
        sustainable materials and powered by energy from clean hydrogen
        fuel cells.

A lot of buildings of German capital Berlin had 3D edition now, guest of imperscriptible Google Earth rich reports. I always cannot come true — open file of this Google Earth, I get a lot of ” to load ” information, but without 3D — nevertheless still one is in Berlin in the sky of the flight demonstrate video (I now also cannot glibly broadcasts this video, I think is a server too busy) . A last minute imagery update of the year has appeared in Google
Earth.

By my count the eighth update this year, Google have continued
the recent trend of announcing the update with a scavenger hunt. http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2007/12/where-in-world-is.html

Whale Spotting in Google Earth

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Thursday, December 27th, 2007 @ 9:52 pm

There are about 80 known whale species around the globe, the
largest of which is of course the Blue Whale, which can measure up
to a massive 30m long.

Such a giant beast should easily be visible on the aerial and
satellite photographs of Google Earth, it’s just a matter of
finding them…

To start with, there’s definitely a blue whale in this
Japanese swimming pool, but I don’t think that
counts.

alt="">

The Route 66 landmark
Blue Whale slide is so famous it even appeared in Sega’s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_of_Route_66 King of
Route 66 video game. http://www.theroadwanderer.net/66Oklahoma/catoosa.htm More
info.

alt="">

Outside of UC Santa Cruz’s Long Marine Laboratory there’s an
85-foot long Blue Whale
skeleton. The female whale was washed ashore of Pescadero Beach
in 1979, after dying of unknown causes.

alt="">

We’ve still not found any live whales though!
Off the coast of Santa Barbara there’s a 10m long
grey blob that could resemble a whale, or more likely
a shark. Either way it would have to be very close to the surface
to be seen so easily. I’m not convinced.

alt="">

Reverence‘ is a sculpture by Jim Sardonis, which depicts two
whales seemingly diving into the grass. The tails are each 12-13
foot tall and made of granite. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverence_(sculpture) More
info.

alt="">

Back in Japan, and
Ueno Park has more than tails - there’s a life size Blue Whale
diving into the ground. http://www.kahaku.go.jp/english/exhibitions/ueno/permanent/03/index.html
More info.

alt="">

And finally, to
Argentina, where there could just be real
whales
.

According to whale expert http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/644432/an//page/vc/vc/1
wildslide these are http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Right_Whales southern
right whales who breed in this area during the months of May
and October. Success!

Live Satellite Images in Google Earth!

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Thursday, December 27th, 2007 @ 9:52 pm

As part of the Google Earth image update
relaeased last week Google quietly added a major new feature to
Google Earth - live satellite images!

Using the live satellite mode I created a screen capture of cars
driving down a road, which you can see in the animated thumbnail
below.

src='/wp-content/uploads/2007/20071223224522077801.gif'
height='120' width='160' >

Live Satellite only works for the city of Edinburgh, UK but will
be rolled out to other cities in the near future. Apparently Google
wanted to keep this amazing new feature quiet so
as to not overload the satellite’s built-in web server.

If you’d like to see the Live Satellite Mode in
action yourself then load up
this placemark file.

Be warned that Edinburgh is very cloudy today, so you may have
to search around a bit to find a gap in the clouds.

alt="">

We’re told that as Google add the Live Satellite feature to more
and more cities they plan to rename Google Earth to http:/local.live.com/ Google Live Local.

Jamesburg Earth Station

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 @ 8:49 pm

This is the 30-metre wide satellite dish of the
Jamesburg Earth Station. Originally built in 1968 to support
the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Earth Station was shut down in 2002
and put up for sale.

>

It was subsequently bought by a group of Ham-radio geeks, who
spent several months restoring it - and in February they actually
got it working, bouncing 20 radio signals off the moon.

There’s a great ground-level shot http://www.jamesburgdish.org/ at the official site, and
it was http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_generic.jsp?channel=aerospacedaily&id=news/restore0312.xml&headline=Space History Buffs Try to Save Sat Dish
Aviation Week that published the original story.
