Bingham Canyon Mine

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 @ 10:55 am

This is the gargantuan
Bingham Canyon Mine - an open-pit copper, gold, silver and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molybdenum molybdenum mine
near Salt Lake City, Utah.

In full-scale production since 1906, the pit is over 0.75 miles
(1.2 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covers 1,900 acres (7.7
km²), making it the largest open-pit copper mine in the world, and
the world’s largest man-made excavation.

alt="">

All along the road to the sensibly named mining town of
Copperton, we can see the absolutely massive
3 million dollar dump trucks - which are among the largest
trucks in the world. Used to transport the raw ore their huge size
is a necessity, as by 2004 the mine had produced more than 17
million tons of copper - more copper than any other mine in the
world.

The Y Bridge

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 @ 10:55 am

Zanesville in Ohio claims that their
Y-bridge is “the only Y-shaped bridge in the
world
!”

Now in its fifth incarnation, the bridge spans the Licking river
to the West and the Muskingum river to the East. Allegedly this
makes the Y-bridge the only place in the US where you can cross a
bridge but stay on the same side of the river.

alt="">

Hang on, Ohio actually have another Y-bridge! Not too
far from Zanesville, the
Akron Y-bridge is where two roads come together to share a
bridge. Officially titled the “All-American Bridge”, its other
unofficial title is sadly the “Suicide Bridge”.

alt="">

Uh, hang on again. The “
Galena Y-bridge” in Galena, Missouri has been closed to
vehicles since 1986 (when a new bridge was created to the North),
but nevertheless it’s still a Y-shaped bridge. In
this case the Y-shape was created to allow traffic heading East
across the bridge to go either North or South, as heading straight
on would involve driving straight into the side of a mountain…

The http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2007/09/where-in-world-is.html
Google Latlong Blog has posted an announcement of new and
updated 60cm satellite imagery in Google Earth#fn:1″ rel=”footnote 1.

As
with the last update the list of what’s new is formatted as a
set of clues which you have to solve. But if you’re feeling lazy

The World’s Largest Swimming Pool

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 @ 10:55 am

Apparently officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World
Records, here in San Alfonso del Mar in Chile you can hardly
miss
the world’s largest swimming pool!

alt="">
alt="">

This absolutely immense pool is 1
kilometre long
and covers eight hectares - that’s
80,000 square metres! Furthermore, it contains an
incredible 250,000 cubic metres of water.

And yes, it’s right beside the beach, and no more than a stone’s
throw… from the sea.

Hot Slag

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 @ 10:55 am

At the ThyssenKrupp steel mill in Bruckhausen is a fantastic
image of
molten slag being poured out of a slag car.

alt="">

Slag is a by-product of the manufacturing of steel; an alloy
produced by smelting pig iron at temperatures of 1650
°C
.

alt="">

The slag is poured into pits, where it is left to cool down
before being recycled as aggregate for cement or concrete.

alt="">

Just because it’s Friday, today’s phonetically-related random
fact is that one of the other meanings of the word “slag”
(used in the UK to describe a person “of loose morals”) is
apparently considered the http://townleyblog.blogspot.com/2006/04/anglosphere-is-to-offense.html
16th most offensive word in the English language id="fnref:1">#fn:1″ rel=”footnote 1, just above

manufacturing, but if you’re in a much more Friday-orientated
frame of mind, then you could amuse yourself with Wikipedia’s
extensive information on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profanity Profanity in all
its forms!

USS Ohio (October 07 Image Update)

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Friday, January 25th, 2008 @ 1:14 am

This is the
USS Ohio
, an Ohio class submarine cruising along the
US/Canada border in the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strait_of_Juan_de_Fuca Straight
of Juan de Fuca. Flanked to the
north and
south, it looks like it has its missile tubes open, as seen http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/usa/slbm/ohio-dvic110.jpg in
this image.

src="http://googlesightseeing.com//wp-content/suboctober07imagery.jpg"

The best thing about the appearance of this sub is that it tells
us that the
October 07 image update has finally made it onto Google Maps!
Expect lots of exciting new posts, and get submitting your

Multi-Vehicle Car Accident Captured on Google Street View

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Friday, January 25th, 2008 @ 1:14 am

Last week Google http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2007/10/more-street-view-cities-to-explore.html
updated their Street View coverage to include Chicago,
Pittsburgh, Portland, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Tucson - bringing
the total number of Street View cities up to 15.

So far the most dramatic discovery in these new images has been
made in Phoenix, Arizona, where the Google Street View Van has come
across a http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&ie=UTF8&om=1&layer=c&cbll=33.48382,-112.06506&cbp=1,163.4426945326581,0.5,0,2.8973863700275095&ll=33.512345,-112.062778&spn=0.062116,0.094242&z=13
pretty serious accident involving a Range Rover and an Audi in
a collision at a junction.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&ie=UTF8&om=1&layer=c&cbll=33.48382,-112.06506&cbp=1,163.4426945326581,0.5,0,2.8973863700275095&ll=33.512345,-112.062778&spn=0.062116,0.094242&z=13
src="http://googlesightseeing.com/wp-content/streetviewtrafficaccident.jpg"
alt="">

Dramatically, the speed of the impact has actually flipped the
Range Rover right over onto its roof. Fortunately however it
doesn’t look like there were any serious injuries on this occasion,
as by the time the Google Van approaches a policemen is already on
scene, but there doesn’t appear to be an ambulance around
anywhere.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&ie=UTF8&om=0&layer=c&cbll=33.483821,-112.06527&cbp=1,123.7752779635094,0.5,0,10.448526003956559&ll=33.512345,-112.063122&spn=0.107773,0.199986&z=13
src="http://googlesightseeing.com/wp-content/streetviewtrafficaccident2.jpg"

So can anyone work out exactly what happened here?

Thanks to Fraser.

Kazan Cathedral (St. Petersburg)

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Friday, January 25th, 2008 @ 1:14 am

This is St. Petersburg’s imposing
Kazan Cathedral, which features an impressive and absolutely http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7b/Kazanskij_sobor.jpg
massive stone colonnade, encircling a small garden and central
fountain. In 1876, this was the location of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazan_demonstration first ever
political demonstration in Russia.

This is actually one of several cathedrals dedicated to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Kazan Our Lady of

Plane Aerotowing a Glider

Filed under: Google Sightseeing — Wrote by Lees on Friday, January 25th, 2008 @ 1:14 am

Check out this brilliant shot of a plane in flight,
aerotowing a glider into the sky!

alt="">

These guys clearly took off from the nearby Devon & Somerset
Gliding Club, where we can see
several other gliders, presumably waiting for their own time in
the sky.

alt="">

You can see all sort of pictures of gliders at the http://www.dsgc.co.uk/ DSGC’s homepage, and read more
about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliding Gliding at
Wikipedia.
